I rewrote the Xnalara/XPS importer-exported from scratch. Now it has better performance, unicode character support, binary and ascii import/export, pose import import/export and default pose support.

First thing is the new XPS Toolshelf. It only appears in object mode and the available options depend on the current selected objects.
You can import from the file menu or use the toolshelf for quicker access. Also from the XPS toolshlef you can change the view mode to GLSL, Shadeless materials and reset to normal.
 Toolshelf by johnzero7

Importing to Blender

  • When importing Xnalara/XPS models bones that don't affect the mesh will be moved to the layer 2 of the armature.
  • Pose bones will be colored according to Bone Groups and affected meshes.
  • To import a pose, just make selection that includes the armature and import the pose. The selection can include other objects (meshes, lamps, etc.) but the pose will be applied only to the first armature within the selection.
  • You can import ascii or binary meshes.
  • You can adjust UV mapping displacement.
  • You can import the default pose if any

Exporting to XPS

  • All meshes within selection will be exported. But only the first armature found in the selection.
  • You can export ascii or binary (.mesh or .xps).
  • You can adjust UV mapping displacement.
  • You can export the current as the default pose.

Rules?
Anything in the internet is fair game. Go nuts.

PS: If REALY REALLY REALLY like the models I see made with this I MIGHT add more features like Cycle Materials converter and Automatic Render group renaming.

now that's a very useful tool, specially for me that i make mmd models, well, i can't animate on xnalara, but that doesn't mean i can't rig the models to make them work for me and mmd, thanks a lot for sharing such an useful tool, now i don't have to use xnalara to port them to blender to begin with.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the addon doesn't modify textures in anyway. If it imported/exported something like a texture atlas it is because it already existed.
Also the amature of the model is whatever is included in the model file. If it is complex of simple, it only depends of what the creator of the model did.

Check the guide to export models. Most likely you are not naming the meshes correctly.

It shows up but I can't check mark it on.
I click the box to check it, and it does absolutely nothing.
I downloaded 1.0.7 or whatever the newest one is called.

Update your version of blender. Recommend Blender 2.77.

Also check this tutorial made by DragonLord720 for installing the addon.

Hello, I used this method and it worked quite successfully and I must thank you for providing this!  However, I have one question if you have knowledge for this.  I imported a mesh.ascii model into blender and the Materials and Skeleton was intact completely so I exported it to Cinema 4D where I could check the model to make sure it is okay in that program before proceeding to Poser to add it to the library for Animation, and when I loaded the model as an .fbx exported from Blender into Cinema 4D the skeleton seemed like it was set up well, but on the sides of the skeleton were giant bones that appeared to be the fingers, knee, toes, and basically a bunch of other things that were associated with limbs and I was wondering if you have knowledge about a solution to this issue.  Thank you for providing this!  I posted images to hopefully aid you in understanding on my profile brandonk10.deviantart.com

Thank you for your great work! But I got a problem with the conversation of the materials to Cycles.

I got these black textures all the time (with many models)

picload.org/image/wrwdgpg/mate…

The meshes are seperat so we could maybe delete them or hide them on the conversation process

picload.org/image/wrwdgwd/mate…

Or at least dont use the normal for the diffuse shader since this is causing it to be black :/

Is there any way to remove them on conversation or something i can do to avoid them? It is very frustrating to remove them all the time :(

I hope oyu can help me and anyone else having this problem <3 You did a great job and let me know if I can help you fixing things :)

You will see the same issue in XPS if you disable backface culling.

You "can" turn on backface culling in blender, but only in the 3DViewer, not for renders.

You could setup something similar to backface culling in the node editor using the Geometry node, but you need to do this for each material. And you will have the problem of Z-fighting between the transparent mesh and the opaque one. So you will end up scaling or using a shrinkwrap modifier to fix the Z-fighting.

As you can see I haven't found a reliable solution (yet), much less one I can automate in the addon.

Is there anyway to set it so that when I hit the convert to cycles the MIXrgb for the specular map is black instead of white?

not at the moment, I found out that most of the time I want to make things "shinier". And I haven't found a way to manage it both ways.

So for now the only option is to change the inputs in the RGBmix. Set the spec texture to color1 and set color 2 to black

Once you import a model into blender you can do whatever you want with it. XPS also can export to OBJ if you don't whant to use blender.

this may be a dumb question but, whats the difference between the  mesh and the mesh ascii
Reply
:iconjohnzero7:
johnzero7 Featured By Owner Oct 16, 2015
They contain almost the same information.
The biggest difference is the format how it is stored.
.mesh is for binary files (same as .xps)
.mesh.ascii is for text files

if you open a .mesh.ascii file with a text editor like notepad, you can read it and make some sense of the contents.
But if you open a .mesh with a text editor all you see are lots of odd symbols and unintelligible gibberish.

Dear John,

I appreciate how much effort you put into this add-on. However, whenever I import a XNA model into Bender I get the same issue as XMokouX, but more severe. I use back face culling in XNA and with the invisible hair textures in Blender I even tried did shift plus control plus n and it still did nothing, almost the whole hair materials/textures are transparent upon arriving in Blender. If I take transparency off, the hair color changes drastically. This happens for all my imported models. Please help!

I assume you are using the latest version of blender (2.75) and of the addon (1.5.3).
Send me a link to one of the models you are having trouble with

Using Blender 2.74, importing works great AFAIK but when I export the same file I just imported, untouched, it only makes a generic_item.mesh mesh file, and no ASCII.

Any idea?

As mentioned in the exporting guide, near the end, the addon can export *.mesh / *.mesh.ascii / *.xps

*.mesh
is the default format but you can change it

Oh that was easy. Still a lot to figure out, but at least now I know it works with a decent version of blender, it's just impossible for me to go back to 2.49.

Thanks for your help and scripts, amazing work!
